try try again Tuesday

ok..so I actually tried this today (Monday)..but whatever.
I've wanted to try etching glass ever since I saw pen n' paper flowers tutorial {hang out at Jessica's blog - it's full of beautiful inspiration + she's a friend from back in the day :) }.  Then I saw Hello, Good Gravy! posted about etching
{hang out at Lelan's blog..it's one that I stalk visit daily}.

I got my supplies  - contact paper, 3" punch and vinyl letter.  And of course the jar.

Next step was to apply the etching creme

Here's the finished product

OK.  Here's the deal.
I tried several times (read:4 to 6) before I finally had this masterpiece :)
The bottle says 'shake well' for a reason.
I could not figure out why the darn stuff was so runny.
HELLO...I wasn't shakin' it :)
Once I figured out the 1st step...I used a smaller punch along with a smaller vinyl G.  Weeeeellll..let's just say it didn't work that time either.
After finding a video on YouTube (yes, I know),
I discovered you had to rinse the creme after a few minutes.
So..back to the dining room craft table I went.
Decided against using a punch this time and opted for masking tape and a vinyl letter.  Weeeeellll...let's just say it didn't work because
your are NOT supposed to rinse the brand of creme I was using.
DUH!  Can I just say I felt like the biggest dumb-dumb.
After realizing MY brand required drying (only)....I was left with only GIANT vinyl G's...and that's how I got the 'work of art' above!
And yes...I have the *other* etching creme on the way (thank you eBay)!!!
I should have just followed Jessica and Lelan's instructions...
would have saved me an afternoon of hassle :)
ugh!

*Amour Etch is what I am waiting for.  It actually changes the surface of the glass.
The creme I used was more like 'paint' on glass - which wasn't the result I wanted.

Holy cow! You gals are soooo creative! I need to start stalking all of you since I don't have a creative bone in my body!

Good to know that the cream you used was more like paint. It still looks amazing!! How did you feel about punching through the vinyl? Maybe my punch is getting worn, but I found it difficult to cut through both the backing and the actual vinyl.

I've seen that done before, but I've never tried it myself. I don't know if I have the patience. It's cute though. Where did you get the vinyl? Did you use a scrapbook punch? Is that what you mean?

Staci, thanks for sharing your experience! I've kind of felt like etching would be like this, so I haven't tried it yet. You'll have to post about the new cream you ordered. Thanks for braving this project for all of us scardy cats!!!

What brand is your 3" punch? I need a new one, and I think I'd like to try something different from the Giga Punch brand I have. It seemed to wear out pretty fast compared to my other punches.

That turned out so cute! I used the same product last year on a cookie jar, and I was so disappointed that it didn't really etch the surface! My not really etched cookie jar is still sitting on my counter looking all cute even if it isn't really etched!

I think it's cute. Sometimes crafts can be so frustrating, especially when they don't go right the first (4) times...believe me, I know. ;) Thanks for the visit today!!

I love the shape of that jar! And I will remember to shake well.

And I have to say that you are EVERYWHERE that I go! You are always two comments ahead of me! ;D
